It creates an unstable system, that is completely the opposite of driving forward. Every mistake compounds on itself until it its corrected, it's almost like trying to balance a pencil on your finger.

I think backing up would be perfectly stable if you inverted the caster. A car with drive wheels in the front (relative to travel) and steering wheels in the back is about the most stable configuration you can get.

I once had one of those cheap, tiny RC cars that had a horrible turning radius. how did I solve that problem? I drove it backwards.

I drove a forklift on the road once. Needed a push from a pickup truck to get it to the speed I was going. Holy shit was that scary, totally unstable.
